A defense attorney entered a not-guilty plea for Anthony “Max” Freay on charges of failing failing to report a death, desecrating human remains, suppressing evidence, unlawfully concealing remains and giving false information to police.
Assistant Bergen County Prosecutor Danielle Grootenboer told the judge that she and the lawyer, Albert Wunsch III, "have been talking,” but that there was no basis yet for a plea offer.
Wunsch said evidence in the case is "voluminous," and Superior Court Judge Susan J. Steele gave him until Dec. 21 for a next court appearance to give him time to review everything.
Mila Kostodinava of Dumont, 18, had left her home on May 28 after differences with her family and was apparently staying with Freay. The Dumont High School junior was reported missing a few days later.

On June 17 of this year, Frey led investigators to the spot near the Women's Federation Monument where they found her remains, authorities said.
"He didn't kill her," Molinelli told CLIFFVIEW PILOT at the time. "But he didn't pick up the phone and dial 911 when she died."
Freay spent two days in the county jail on marijuana possession charges in May before being released on bail. Soon after, "things began to come together," a law enforcement source said.
